Stumbling Towards Progress: Awkward Walker Consulting is Live
My passion for public service ignited when I was eighteen years old on a trip to Washington, D.C., when the flags at the White House flew at half-mast on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor. That day, history became real as I took a moment to understand service and sacrifice, and I knew I wanted to be a part of making a difference.
As my experiences grew to expertise through founding the procurement team at the US Digital Service, creating the DITAP training program, and now leading the Digital Services Coalition has reinforced a core belief: lasting change in government requires deep problem-solving, asking the right questions, and bridging the government-industry divide.
That’s why I’m announcing the launch of my consulting firm:
Awkward Walker Consulting LLC. I’m here to: Empower businesses to mature processes and improve their ability to deliver quality digital services to government clients.
Guide governments through the complexities of digital service procurement, focusing on strategies that increase speed, consistency, and results.
But what is Awkward about this?
The awkwardness in my journey stems from the inherent clash between two worlds: The Idealism of Public Service:
That spark at Pearl Harbor ignited a deep desire to make government truly work for the people. Taxpayer dollars are a sacred trust, and the ideal is to see them used wisely for the greatest impact.
The Reality of Bureaucracy: Government systems were (and largely still are) built for a different era. Trying to deliver quality solutions within that system leads to constant friction.
That friction is where “Awkward Walker” thrives.
I Understand the Mismatch: I’ve navigated both sides of the equation. I know where the pain points are and the hidden paths to change.
I Speak Both Languages: I translate government-speak for industry and explain the business imperatives to government teams. It’s awkward and often uncomfortable, but necessary for progress.
I am Not Afraid to Stumble: Sometimes the best solution is the one no one has tried before. Awkward Walker doesn’t fear proposing unconventional ideas or challenging the status quo because that’s where transformation happens.
“Awkward” is acknowledging the tension and using it as fuel. It’s about embracing the uncomfortable truths to drive real improvement in government services. Now – before anyone panics – I am not stepping away from my role at the Digital Services Coalition – where I get to support this mission along with the other dedicated member companies. Through this personal and side endeavor I am expanding my capacity to bring my unique knowledge to help other victims of bureaucratic gridlock.
