Following the news that Alpha Omega has welcomed Stephen D. Ambrose to the team as its first Chief Scientist, looking to leverage his expertise to support the critical missions of NOAA, USDA, DHS and other key partners, we took a moment to find out more about the opportunity this presents for Alpha Omega to address key challenges, and to help government prioritize.

Leveraging 35 Years of Perspective

I bring over 35 years of service at NOAA and NASA, followed by a decade in the private sector, supporting the missions of these agencies, as well as the Department of Interior and the EPA. The challenges in industry are distinct but equally compelling, as it plays an increasingly vital role in advancing science and technology. This shift is evident in the rise of commercial space ventures and advancements in artificial intelligence. The rapid pace of innovation in these areas often surpasses the capacity of government entities to adapt, making industry a critical driver of progress.

Strengthening Support for Federal Partners

I joined Alpha Omega because I recognized a growing company rooted in IT and emerging technologies with an opportunity to expand its scientific capabilities. Science is the foundation that drives innovation and technology, and I saw potential to contribute to that growth. My experience joining the company has been overwhelmingly positive, and I foresee a bright future for Alpha Omega as it strengthens its support for federal and international partners. The need for advanced weather and climate science solutions has never been more pressing, and I am excited to contribute to this mission and help build a more resilient society.

An Opportunity for Science to Address Key Challenges

The future is upon us, and with it comes the escalating challenges of climate change, which directly impact critical areas such as food security, water resources, cybersecurity, and public health. Drawing from my decades of experience with NOAA, NASA, DOI, and other agencies, I bring a unique perspective to help Alpha Omega identify opportunities where science can directly address these challenges.

At the forefront of this work are decision-makers who rely on data-driven tools to safeguard human lives and infrastructure. By leveraging science to provide actionable insights, Alpha Omega can play a pivotal role in equipping leaders to make informed decisions.

Global instability is at a tipping point, with challenges like migration often stemming from economic insecurity and environmental pressures. Addressing these underlying causes, both domestically and internationally, fosters stability and resilience. My goal is to help Alpha Omega contribute solutions that enable societies to better understand and adapt to their environments, building long-term sustainability.

Helping Government Prioritize

A significant trend in the GovCon space is the changing priorities that accompany a new administration in Washington, D.C., particularly regarding climate change. While climate change has been a concern for decades, it has recently gained widespread recognition. However, addressing it effectively remains a complex challenge.

While substantial funding has been allocated to climate initiatives, ensuring these investments are directed towards impactful solutions is critical. Prioritization is essential, particularly in the areas of resilience and adaptation. Unfortunately, global cooperation on climate issues remains insufficient, and the urgency to act has never been greater. The “climate train” has left the station, and we must focus on building systems that can withstand these changes.

Population growth and development in high-risk areas exacerbate vulnerabilities. Industry has a crucial role in addressing these challenges by driving innovation and leveraging investments beyond government funding. By aligning efforts and ensuring returns on investment, industry can help government prioritize actions that deliver meaningful results.

While solar and wind energy are vital, no single technology will suffice. Nuclear energy and even fossil fuels will remain part of the energy mix for the foreseeable future. The transition must be pragmatic, balancing current realities with long-term sustainability. This requires thoughtful, incremental changes that benefit future generations.

Continuing the Work of Collaboration

I am deeply grateful to Alpha Omega for entrusting me to lead its scientific initiatives and leverage my diverse experience to tackle pressing challenges. My career has been characterized by a broad range of expertise, earning me the description of a “renaissance professional.” While specialists drive innovation, individuals like me focus on applying those advancements to address societal needs—a role I have proudly embraced throughout my career. I firmly believe that diversity in expertise and collaboration is essential for solving today’s complex problems. At Alpha Omega, I look forward to continuing this work and contributing to solutions that make a tangible difference in people’s lives.
