Congratulations to Debbie Nguyen, Benjamin Zalinger, and Maria Ewing for their award-winning support to the COVID-19 response. The National Risk Management Center (NRMC) recognized Debbie, Ben, and Maria for their exemplary contributions to the NRMC Incident Response Analysis Cell and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency’s COVID Task Force. Their award cited tenacious research and innovative analysis, with their quantitative analysis having helped the infrastructure protection community better understand the functional impact of the pandemic. The award also praised their professionalism, personal initiative, and devotion to duty.

As a part of their support to the COVID Task Force, these members of our data analytics team helped author a Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. COVID-19 surges have stressed hospital systems and negatively affected healthcare and public health infrastructures. The report shows that as ICU beds become scarce, excess deaths from all causes will occur in the next few weeks. Our team’s statistical analysis clearly demonstrates how hospital strain caused by COVID-19, as measured by ICU bed capacity, has far-reaching effects on health outcomes and mortality.
