Today was my last day assigned as the U.S. Coast Guard’s first Chief Data & Artificial Intelligence Officer (CDAO). I look upon the last three years as my most treasured assignment in an epic 32 year career serving in the hashtag#USCG. Thank you to all of the mentors, colleagues and friends who have guided me. Starting from nothing but an idea, my great team (U.S. Coast Guard Office of Data & Analytics) has forever re-written the organization’s trackline and shifted the culture to demand a more hashtag#data driven and hashtag#AI enabled Coast Guard. We have set technology, policy, and structure in place that provides the foundations for a successful future where AI can easily produce significant advantages to business and mission success at scale across domains. Moving forward, I am excited to announce that I will serve the next 10 months as the Deputy Director of the US Department of Homeland Security Presidential Transition Office (PTO). It is truly an honor to be selected to serve in this role. Finally, I have to confess that I fell in love with data/analytics/AI. The opportunity, challenges and people in this community forged a new passion for me. Following my service on the PTO, I have decided to retire from the Coast Guard to pursue a leadership role in data, analytics, and AI.
