We take note when well-known names take on new roles. Jim St. Clair, a recognized industry leader with over 25 years of experience driving digital transformation in health care, a wealth of experience and a proven track record in public health and technology, recently took on a new role with Altarum. Why the move? Read on.
Depth in Public Health and IT
I have about 25 years in public sector services, overlapping with my 12 years of active and reserve service in the US Navy. Out of those 25, federal health, health technology, and IT standards comprise about 19 of them. During part of that time, I was immersed in public health as the executive director of the Linux Foundation Public Health project.
Why the move to Altarum?
Pure serendipity brought me here. I was aware of the extensive contributions that Altarum has made in public health while I was working with another nonprofit in Michigan, where Altarum has a large presence. I’m very excited to be focused on health services in the public sector again. My combination of experience in technology, IT standards, participation in the public health community, and work in federal health gives me a wide-ranging perspective. That perspective will help our clients navigate change while providing best-in-class solutions.
What’s Ahead
I intend to position our Public Health Systems division as a service provider for the future. We have extensive capabilities in data modernization, electronic reporting, and data exchange that can contribute to improving public health infrastructure–and we have the workforce to guide adopting new technology applications for public health data. Imagine, for example, if agencies could leverage data to drive down health expenditures with decision support, predictive analytics, and more automation to tie population health to quality, value-based care.
Facing Challenges Head On
Nothing I can say will do justice to the tremendous challenges the industry is facing. We encounter new challenges each day we get out of bed. I think what the thousands of us in this industry can do is leverage our work to ensure quality care for all. Modernizing our health infrastructure is something we can all get behind whether it’s coming from government, or philanthropy to support it, or other public/private partnerships to engage.
Power of Partnerships
I’ve always believed in the power of partnerships. The best partnerships are built on strong relationships between organizations with similar goals and values. I welcome opportunities to partner with all small businesses, start-ups, and large integrators. I especially welcome partners with sophisticated solutions that may not have experience in public sector health but are seeking collaboration with proven, impactful applications –especially in artificial intelligence and data analytics.
Mission Driven
Nonprofits such as Altarum are mission-oriented and driven by our impact instead of shareholder value. This provides a unique business proposition for for-profit companies and helps us attract top talent who want to make a difference in public health.
